Don King’s Prizefighter Preview

This June 10 Don King Presents: Prizefighter is due. When I first heard that there was going to be another boxing game out for the Xbox 360 I was PUMPED… and then I found out it was FaceBreaker, which is fine with me, don’t get me wrong… I will most likely end up buying FaceBreaker (and the fact that it is being developed by the same team that did Fight Night Round 3 is very encouraging) but I was just hoping that there would be something a little more comparable to Fight Night Round 3 coming out. And then I heard about Don King Presents: Prizefighter.

Don King's Prizefighter

Judging by the screen shots from Team Xbox the graphics look pretty good, but after reading the article I am not totally convinced that Don King’s Prizefighter will be on the same level as Fight Night Round 3. All of the aspects of the game seem very similar to FNR3, the main focus is in the career mode and you use training to build up your fighters stats. So, the reason that in my mind DKP:P might not quite live up to FNR3 is because of this statement, “more Street Fighter than Fight Night” when describing the actual boxing matches. That suggest to me that the Prizefighter development team didn’t use the analog stick and relied more on button mashing. As you can tell I am not a big fan of that idea. This is just one gamers opionion, but I have a feeling I’m not the only one that feels that way.

Now I am not set out to bash PrizeFigher here, I am defianly going to give it a fair trial after I get my hands on a copy and plus there are plenty of things I like about the game too, One of them is the cast of fighters.

“The roster of boxers will total more than 80, with 40 of them being fictional fighters, but 30 being contemporary pugilists, such as Joe “Italian Dragon” Calzaghe, Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik and Vitali “Dr. Iron Fist” Klitschko. DKP:P also offers ten classic fighters, including the previously mentioned Holmes and Norton.” - Team Xbox

I am a normal guy who loves to play video games. My current favorite system is the Xbox 360 and the game I am stuck on (read addicted to) right now is Rock Band. I also have a Wii along with most of the consoles from the past, such as a Super Nintendo, original NES, and a Sega Dreamcast.

  1. Button pressing has nothing to do with “button mashing.” You could button mash in FNR3 in FNR3. You could throw 150 punches per round in FNR3 without getting tired. THAT’s button-mashing, regardless of the method of input, may it be the buttons or analog stick. Button-mashing will be ineffective in Prizefighter because of its realistic stamina system, where you’ll be required to pretty much fight at a realistic pace; that is, picking your shots, throwing a combo here and there, stepping away, defending, etc., as opposed to throwing non-stop punches the way you could in FNR3.

  2. Saint,
While I do agree that the pace of fights in FNR3 could be unrealistic and I do see your point about button mashing, one thing I don’t agree with is the stamina. There were plenty of times while playing Fight Night Round 3 where my fighter got so tired he could barely throw a punch.

Sure, at times it may not be exactly “realistic” but this is still a form of entertainment and that is the primary objective of the game, to entertain.

For example Floyd Mayweather is a great boxer but it isn’t very entertaining to watch him because he is constantly running around the ring, IMO it is more fun to watch a boxer that is offensive minded.

  3. i don’t know if my other post got through, so sorry for the double-post. as far as FNR3’s stamina, by landing a haymaker you instantly replenish your stamina and will be fatigue-proof for a few seconds during which you are able to punch faster. you land a haymaker, throw a flurry, rinse repeat. the result is 200 punches per round.

And as far as “realism,” there’s NEVER been a true boxing sim. For boxing purists, FNR3 was a mockery of the sport. I’m sure you’re familiar with the ridiculous “stun parries” in FNR3. That feature alone ruined the game. Casual gamers would like non-stop punching. That’s not boxing.

For every Need for Speed or Burnout game, you have a Forza or Gran Turismo. Need for Speed fans would complain about having to slow down considerably for corners and tight turns because they just want to burn through each lap. After all, racing is about speed, not braking. Prizefighter is the Forza of boxing.

  4. Yeah, now that you mention that I do remember the landing a haymaker and then being able to whale on some people.
Yeah, there has never been a true boxing sim and I liked your comparison of the racing games and relating them to Fight Night and Prizefighter. I really do hope that Prizefighter is the Forza to FHR3’s Need for Speed. It will be great for the gaming community to have both out there.

Are you going to get Prizefighter today Saint?

  5. Yes. I’m counting down the hours to when I get off work and get the game. I’ll be playing that in roughly 4 hours or so, which right now seems more like 4 years!

  6. Sweet man, let me know what you think of it.
On a side note, would you be interested in doing a guest post on this blog?

  7. Sure thing

  8. You seem like you really know what you are talking about and I think it would be really cool if you could (if you want to) write a review (or just your thoughts) on Prizefighter?

Let me know what you think. I would announce that we are having a guest blogger and I could also provide a link in the post to your site (or just a site that you prefer)

Let me know what you think and feel free to use the contact page if you don’t want to discuss in the comments.

  9. I’ve written a rough draft on my “review,” it only covers the fighting mechanics of Prizefighter, which has been highly, highly, underrated by most gaming websites. i should have it up at my website by tonight. you can link it or i can post it here too if you’d like.

  10. Awesome! It’d be sweet if we could get it posted here and then I will also link to your site. If you’d like you could send it to me as an attachment, paste it in an email to me, or just send me the link and I can copy/paste it over here, or whatever works. Let me know what you think.
