US mothers Madd at GTA IV

MADD about GTA IV

As many of you might have heard recently MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is pretty upset about the ability to drive drunk in the new GTA IV video game. The group has contacted the US Entertainment Software Ratings Board to try to get the game’s rating bumped up to ‘Adults Only’. I don’t see Rockstar letting this happen because many top retailers in the US will not let an ‘Adults Only’ rated game on their shelfs and that could drastically reduce profits.

“Drunk driving is not a game and it is not a joke. Drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime and 100 per cent preventable,” said Madd.

I agree 100% with that statement and while drunk driving is certainly not a game Grand Theft Auto IV is and most people have the ability to differentiate between a game and real life. Plus, I would actually argue that GTA IV could help MADD’s cause. During the game when Nicco (your player) becomes drunk it becomes VERY hard for you to control the car and while driving the screen moves back and forth (one of my friends said he actually became dizzy while looking at this) This also causes you to get noticed by the police easier and on top of that the game itself suggest to the player to take a cab instead of trying to drive drunk. I think this actually highlights the dangers of, rather than glorifying, drunk driving.

  1. I would have to agree with the drunk driving stuff. It is very difficult to drive while drunk in GTA IV and if the police spot you it makes it even that much more difficult because you have to lose them while driving intoxicated and that proves to be very tough.
